Yes, Rhodesian Ridgebacks were OCCASIONALLY used to hunt large game in their native Africa.
However, they were farm dogs on rural ranches. This meant that they were likely used in stock herding, and to protect the homestead. The latter explains their loving disposition and willingness to be (rather oversized) lap dogs.
I'm starting to think that people focus in on the "Lion Hunter" aspect of the Ridgeback history to the exclusion of all else. Sort of like if everyone said, "German Shephards? Yeah, the Stasi in East Germany used to use them to EAT people..."
