Cooper and His Sticks

Our Dane puppy has developed a stick fixation. More specifically, as soon as he finds a stick in the park he goes through three Stick Stages:

Stage 1 - The Find: In this stage, it is key to survey the area to insure that no one is going to steal your stick.

Stage 2 - The Chew: Savor your stick! Yummy yummy!

Stage 3 - The Evade: Inevitably (if you are lucky), someone will try to come and steal your stick. This immediately leads to a game of Stick Keep Away. This is Cooper's favorite part.

Note the Dane sized stick being used in this game...

Weird Weather and Worried Dogs

Rufus and Cooper were stunned to step out onto the porch today to find that it is SNOWING (yes... snowing...) in April. To dogs who savor warm weather and have been looking forward with great anticipation to spring, this was disheartening indeed...

Rufus is an Internet Star

Rufus recently participated in an interesting April Fool's First experiment over at Amazon Web Services. I've copied and pasted the post below...

DCI - The Dog Computer Interface

Rufus_1 One of the great perks of working at Amazon is that you get to work with a bunch of great people and also with their dogs!

As previously noted in our blog, Rufus is a valued part of our Developer Relations team. He's a Rhodesian Ridgeback owned by Martin Buhr. Martin works on business development for Amazon EC2 and as such he's been pretty busy lately.

Rufus joined our team two years ago when he was just a puppy and he's grown considerably since then. Or, in the local vernacular, he's scaled up!

A couple of weeks ago Martin and I arrived at the office at about the same time. He was trying to get Rufus to settle down. Rufus wasn't cooperating and Martin told me that Rufus was a bit bored. Jokingly I suggested that we could probably train Rufus to do some Mechanical Turk HITS. We both laughed it off and that was that.

Converterguts_1A few days later I mentioned this idea to Mike (once again in jest) but as we discussed the idea the conversation quickly went from silly to serious. Unsure of the level of cognitive skills that we could expect, we figured that Rufus and his kin could probably handle simple HITS which required him to discriminate between two alternatives, such as a dog bone vs. a soda bottle or a bird vs. a cat.

At this point we were still at the hypothetical stage but in our rarefied little world it was starting to seem like we could actually pull this off. Mike has tackled some pretty cool electrical and electronics projects in the past (including the nifty digital to analog converter pictured at right) and it was good to have his expertise available.

Rufushat Mike and I batted around a few ideas for the DCI (Dog-Computer-Interface), starting with some sort of brainwave sensor feeding into the converter. We prototyped this and tried it out on Rufus. He was surprisingly patient. We fitted the sensors into a tin-foil hat which we molded to fit Rufus' head.

We uploaded the raw data into a 10 node cluster of EC2 instances in an attempt to make heads or tails of it but our analytic skills were not up to the task and we had to abandon this aspect of the experiment and head back to the drawing board.

Yesno Jinesh suggested a more direct Yes/No interface and volunteered to build it for us. Starting with a pair of Staples Easy buttons, he wired up a clean and straightforward input system that would accommodate Rufus' paws. This seemed like a much better solution and we were pretty optimistic about it.

Martin had been humoring us in the background but he was starting to think that it might work. We started to give some consideration to types of HITS that Rufus could do. Martin said that Rufus was pretty good at identifying bears, so that seemed like a good start, even if it was of somewhat limited value. This was a proof of concept, after all.

Setup We hooked the buttons up to a spare laptop and propped it up on a box so that Rufus could reach it without too much trouble.

Isthisabear Jinesh created some "Is This a Bear?" HITS and we were just about ready to go.

Martin used up almost half of a box of dog biscuits in the process of training Rufus to look at the screen. He's a smart dog, but there were all sorts of distractions and it was tough to get him to focus on the task at hand.

Gorufus Believe it or not, he actually got pretty good at hitting the proper button before too long. As you can see from the picture at right, the Easy buttons were just right for his gigantic paws.

Once he got going, Rufus was pretty good at identifying the bears in the picture, with an accuracy rate in excess of 80%. Admittedly, the task itself was of limited utility but that wasn't the point.

Rufus has yet to notice that we've recycled the HITS and he now spends an hour or so each day happily sorting out the bears from the non-bears.

Rufusandjin This was a really fun project and we learned a lot by doing it. As you can see from the picture at right, Jinesh and Rufus certainly became good friends.

We've actually got a number of great job openings one the Amazon Web Services team right now; if you like to work hard and play hard, and hang out with great people and their dogs, you should check out the Amazon Jobs site today.

We had a lot of fun putting this little experiment together and we'd like to thank Martin and Rufus for all of their help. You can only pull off something like this once a year, and today was definitely the day to do it.

Turns out that the post an interesting impact on traffic for the AWS blog

Springtime... For Cooper... In Washington...

The weather has (finally) started to get warm, and Cooper has discovered the joys of having one's head out the window on a balmy day. However, in his case, the window in question is on TOP of the car (in the form of a sunroof).

We are not sure which is more entertaining: Cooper's antics as he regally observes the passing scenery, or the gapes, gawfs, and belly laughs he inspires from pedestrians...

Running Rufus

I'm working on getting back into shape (the winters in Seattle make it tough to get motivated), but I recently took Rufus and Cooper on a short trail run in the lush, damp forrests of the Pacific Northwest. Rufus LOVES this sort of thing, as evidenced by the huge grin on his face in the video below.

Cooper even got into the act, and had a blast chasing Rufus through the forrest.

Oh the Weather Outside Is Frightful...

The winter thus far has been dark, cold and damp, even by Seattle standards. This has led to a degree of entropy with our animals, who have taken to gathering on the couch and snoozing for long stretches at a time. Nice to see everyone getting along...

The other evening, I was late in coming to bed, and found that our cheeky monkeys had collectively taken my spot!

Homer picking on Rufus again

Homer and Rufus have been friends for a year and a half. Homer started out with the upper hand:

Although Rufus has gotten MUCH larger, the balance of power does not appear to have changed...

[NOTE: It is well worth waiting until the "money shot" at the end...]

Rufus and Cooper - the movie...

We took this movie on a recent trip to Cannon Beach (see the post below), and it captures the current state of the Cooper - Rufus relationship. Cooper can *almost* keep up with Rufus, and is catching up fast. He is almost as big and heavy as Rufus, but Rufus has way more agility and strength (for now...)

Rufus's Mom on the Agility Course

Catcher rocks! She double qualified on Sat which finished her Open titles, and Sundew (Rufus's sister) qualified in Novice Standard. Which titled her there. On Sunday Catcher missed Q in Ex standard by 1 second, but Sundew double Qed for an Open Standard leg and her 2nd Novice Jumpers leg.

Two weekends ago, we loaded up the boys and headed down to Cannon Beach, Oregon, to attend a wedding. If you've never been there, I highly recommend it, as it is a very special place.

As a bit of trivia, Steven Spielberg chose amazing locato shoot Goonies here in the early 80's.

The drive down from Seattle invariably took longer than we expected, and we arrived after dark. The next morning, Rufus and Cooper were rarin' to get out to the beach, so Kelly and I bundled up and headed out (together with her brother-in-law Bob and his elderly Basenji, Toby).

The morning was crisp and cool, and the tide was out, leaving a vast expanse of firm, wet sand.

Rufus spotted a bunch of gulls picking through the jetsam on the beach left by the receding tide. Ever the optimist, he went pounding off to see how close he could get, Cooper in hot pursuit.

Not surprisingly, the boys did not have any luck getting a gull (Cannon Beach being a very popular beach for dogs, and these gulls having played this game before), and watched in dismay as the birds casually winged down the beach to settle again at the water's edge.

Rufus then decided there MUST be something interesting buried under this all that sand, and set out to find out what it was.

Cooper took this opportunity to find a friend to go romping around with. Cooper chased his new buddy...

...and was chased in return.

Rufus finally tired of trying to dig up the beach, and invited Toby to play.

Toby is not a young dog, and so Rufus was forced to entertain himself while Toby trotted along behind.

Cooper wandered back over, and Rufus too this opportunity to whale on him as only a big brother can...

Note that Cooper is now taller and longer than Rufus, and only trails him by fifteen pounds or so. Better get your licks is while you can, Rufus...

The next day, we loaded up and headed for home, the boys were pretty beat, and watched the passing scenery with drowsy puppy eyes...

After such a big weekend, Cooper was pretty worn out, and wanted nothing more than to curl up on the couch.
